charter companies, campgrounds, marinas, airlines and rental companies. Reservation
handles full calendar scheduling of rooms, halls, tours and seats. Reservation
user-directed configurability for time and date-based resource scheduling and
its flexibility of three types of invoice processes provides a variety of speeds
and functions. The ideal Reservation customer will have from $1M to $10M in
total sales providing either products and/or services in the tourism industry.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Reservation is
an extensive and powerful business management and resource scheduling tool.
With its user-defined invoice processing, inventory control, customer file,

<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The first Dynamic
Application, it3 Foundation, was installed in 1990. It was the result of 4 years
of previous work on a vertical application and the generalization of that product.
This installation was so successful that Foundation was installed in a number
of other businesses. Each client business was in a different vertical market,
i.e. of a different type. The installation locations were: a print shop, veterinary
clinic, auto repair shop, bicycle shop, wood products manufacturer. In each
case the product was adopted after an arms length competitive comparison process
against vertical market products in each industry. A number of case studies
in those early years showed that each client business showed an increase in
annual gross revenue of over 10% (at a typical gross margin of 35%) after computerization
with Foundation.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The Dynamic Application
story started many years earlier when the author was still working as a research
chemist. He asked to have an application developed to automate certain chemical
laboratory functions. The results, while reliable, failed to usefully deliver
the required operational laboratory business needs. The author then spent more
time doing software design himself, putting chemistry aside, and ended up with
an excellent chemistry lab business solution. However, in the process he became
converted to being an IT designer and programmer.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">About 5 years ago,
the author was commissioned to develop and add a time-based scheduling component
on top of the existing Foundation dynamic business management application. While
designing and developing this scheduled departure functionality, the author
was assisting another business in assessing and selecting a solution for a date-based
reservation management business, a motel. The author was able to use dynamic
application concepts to produce a user-configurable application that encompassed
the full range of functionality required for both time- and date-based businesses.
This resulted in a new product, a user- configurable reservation management
system - it3 Reservation. The pioneer tourist adventure company started using
the it3 Reservation product in 1995. The motel owner had been looking for a
suitable application for over 2 years (examining dozens of candidate programs)
with no success. Upon seeing the new dynamic it3 Reservation product, the motel
owner purchased it immediately and has been quite pleased with its subsequent
use.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The Dynamic Application
technology was moved into the Windows world in 1998 with the development of
a new virtual forms technology required to isolate forms generation from static
programmer-designed table structures. This was critical as dynamic applications
needed to be able to produce forms for tables of unknown structure since the
user determines the table structures at run time.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Some hard lessons
were learned from the above experiences. Good, efficient and relevant software
designs are difficult to produce. Many, if not most, software products are limited
in effectiveness because it is difficult to represent complex business processes
in static computer software features. The all too common process of 'computerization'
involves a great deal of business analysis focused at facilitating how to fit
the business to the capabilities of the software. Our goal was one of wanting
to fit the software to client businesses.</font></p>
